John Healey: Chancellor

Andy Burnham’s first major appointment is John Healey as Chancellor.

Healey replaces Rachel Reeves, who served throughout Keir Starmer’s premiership. A former Defence Secretary, he resigned on 11 June after a row over military spending.

The Rawmarsh and Conisbrough MP has been in Parliament since 1997 and is steeped in the old Labour establishment. He served private secretary to Chancellor Gordon Brown from 1999 to 2001. Between 2001 and 2010, he successively served as adult skills minister, treasury minister, local government minister and housing minister.

Burnham promised the biggest change in 40 years. His first Chancellor has spent nearly 30 of them inside Westminster.

New leader. Familiar machinery.
